Throughout the state there are many caves for these bats to live in so they get in our homes much less often than in other places, but there are plenty of homes that are in need of bat control personnel to deal with a bat problem. A Missouri bat problem will arise when a home has areas that are compromised due to weather, age and poor construction habits. This can happen for a variety of reasons but most often it happens because people are misinformed about bats. This can be detrimental by land owners in the state which many people did not know. The bats of Missouri all feed on insects for their diet. Without the bats in the state we would deal with an insect control issue. Instead of farmers worrying about good weather for their crops they would be worrying about how to hold off all the insects that where uprising. Many do not know having a single colony of bats overlooking your land will kill over 600 million insects. That number is staggering. Also these bats are nocturnal so they typically will not interfere with your work throughout your day. So what do you need to do and what does the community need to do when protecting these bats. Also remember in this struggle that many bats are considered an endangered species so killing them can get you into trouble. When looking around your land see if there are any caves nearby. If so you probably have bats living inside of it. Do not go in the cave and do not allow anyone else in there especially during the winter when they are hibernating. If these bats are disturbed during hibernation they can die as they use up the fat they have stored quicker than anticipated. This means they will not have enough to get through the winter. When bats start dying from unnatural causes it is hard for them to repopulate. Around the front of the cave keep the area forested, bats need wooded areas to protect them from natural predators. Also inform your family about what is in the cave and why to stay away. Many times kids think it is funny to disrupt these bats to see them fly around. This can be devastating and easily avoided.
